Shionogi USA Management Team

 

Sapan A. Shah, PhD
President and CEO

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in April of 2002 and since that time, he has led Shionogi’s globalization efforts in the US, including serving on the governing committees of Shionogi-GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals LLC, and building independent development and commercial capabilities within Shionogi USA, Inc.

Prior to joining Shionogi USA, Inc., Dr. Shah was an Associate Principal with the strategic consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where he was a core member of the Pharmaceutical and Corporate Finance & Strategy Practices.

Dr. Shah holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University, as well as bachelor degrees in mathematics and biochemistry through the Integrated Science Program at Northwestern University.



 

Richard A. Paul, MD
Senior Vice President Clinical Development and Chief Medical Officer

Joined Shionogi USA in December of 2005. In his current role, he has overall responsibility for directing the clinical development programs of Shionogi USA, Inc. In addition, Dr. Paul provides primary leadership and oversight to the Medical aspects of Shionogi USA's development and commercial efforts, working closely with external stakeholders as well as counterparts in Shionogi Japan.

Prior to joining Shionogi, Dr. Paul held the titles of Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Development and Regulatory Affairs at Grünenthal USA, Inc, (the USA Pharmaceutical developing agent for Grünenthal GmbH, Aachen) which is located in Bedminster, New Jersey. In addition, Dr. Paul has previously held executive level clinical, drug safety, and regulatory positions with Pharmaceutical, Contract Research Organization and Biotech companies. In a career spanning more than fifteen years, Dr. Paul has played a key role in stewarding several drugs from the bench to the active marketplace.

Dr. Paul is currently a licensed internist in New Jersey. He earned his MD degree and European doctorate standing at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona. Dr. Paul obtained his post-graduate and Fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University Medical and Dental School of New Jersey (UMDNJ, Rutgers University affiliated hospitals) and Harvard Medical School, respectively. Dr. Paul also completed a post-doctorial program in enzymology and Biochemistry at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York. In addition, Dr. Paul previously received appointments as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine from Columbia University during his clinical tenure as an attending physician at Morristown Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, as well as Adjunct Professor at Temple University's Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance graduate degree program.



 

David P. Marra
Vice President, Sales and Marketing

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in July 2004. His responsibilities include leading Shionogi USA, Inc.’s commercialization efforts for marketed and pipeline products, as well as overall commercial business strategy.

Mr. Marra’s therapeutic and diagnostic pharmaceutical experience spans 24 years, embracing areas of cardiovascular, inflammation, central nervous system, women's healthcare, anti-infectives, and acute critical care medicine across hospital, general primary care, and managed care markets. Positions of experience include roles in sales, sales management, sales training, marketing planning, business development, product and marketing management.

In the year prior to joining Shionogi USA, Inc., he was Vice President and Global Marketing Area Head for General Medicine at Amersham Health in the medical diagnostics field. Prior to this, leadership roles at Pharmacia Corporation included Senior Director, Global Prescription Business with marketing and P&L responsibilities for products in the fields of central nervous system and migraine, women's health, and acute care programs for head injury and ischemic stroke. He first joined The Upjohn Company as a Sales Representative in 1980 in Los Angeles and progressed through a series of sales and marketing assignments with Pharmacia & Upjohn, G.D. Searle, Pharmacia, and Amersham Health, to his current role with Shionogi USA, Inc.

Mr. Marra holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Pre-Medicine from Loyola Marymount University at Los Angeles.



 

Bruce Albala, PhD
Vice President, Clinical Development

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in May of 2002. In his current role, he leads the clinical development and operational aspects of Shionogi USA’s development programs, as well as the Stroke and Dementia programs that are currently part of the joint venture with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Albala brings an extensive base of experience in CNS development, including previous roles at Ayerst Laboratories, a division of American Home Products, Medeva and most recently CNS Bio Services, Inc. - a Contract Research Organization specializing in the development of CNS compounds. While at CNS Bio Services, Dr. Albala served as a Clinical Investigator in psychiatry and neurology studies. He also continued to provide clinical and regulatory consulting services to the pharmaceutical and medical device community as president and lead consultant.

Dr. Albala has U.S. patents for both medical devices as well as instruments used in clinical research settings. He has lectured on various industry topics and has scientific publications in both the basic and clinical sciences and has taught courses in the biological, psychological, pharmacological and neurosciences.

Dr. Albala holds a Ph.D. in Biopsychology from Syracuse University. While at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he was first a research fellow in the departments of Psychiatry and Neurology and later a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Neurology.



 

Susan Witham
Vice President, Regulatory Affairs

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in September 2007 and since that time has led Shionogi’s Regulatory Affairs efforts in the United States.

Ms. Witham served previously as the VP of Regulatory Affairs at Adams Respiratory Therapeutics, Inc. and Columbia Laboratories, Inc. She has been in the pharmaceutical industry for approximately 26 years; 17 years in Regulatory Affairs. She has held regulatory positions at Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Worldwide/Ortho Dermatological Drug Products, Aventis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Ms. Witham has a broad experience across therapeutic areas such as CNS, dermatology, metabolism and endocrine, pulmonary, reproductive and urology, and nonprescription products. She has extensive experience and background in IND and NDA submissions, global development, Phase 4 programs/life cycle management, cGMPs, GLP, chemistry submissions, compliance matters, and promotional and advertising activities.

Ms. Witham received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Bridgewater College and has recently been elected to the Executive Women of New Jersey.



 

Gareth H. Morgan
Vice President, Project Management

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in November of 2007. His responsibilities include building Shionogi US Project Management function and directing specific global development programs.

Mr. Morgan served previously as Head of Central Clinical Operations for Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he successfully led a department responsible for operational implementation of global clinical development programs. Prior to BMS, Mr. Morgan held positions as Head of US Project Management and then Head of Global Clinical Project Management at Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Associate Director, Portfolio Management at Genentech, and Project Manager at Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals Inc. (now Sanofi-Aventis). In a career spanning more than 15 years he has led or provided functional oversight to development programs across multiple geographies and therapeutic areas.

Mr. Morgan holds MBA and MS Biological Sciences degrees from Illinois State University as well as a BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences degree from Plymouth University in the UK.



 

Gregg Siefert
Vice President, Human Resources

Joined Shionogi USA, Inc. in July 2008 and is responsible for all aspects of Human Resources.

Mr. Siefert brings over twenty years of HR experience to the company. Most recently he worked as Vice President, Human Resources at Genta Incorporated, a public biopharmaceutical company, where he played a strategic leadership role in the business including accountability for general management and legal activities. Previously, Mr. Siefert held management positions in Staffing and Human Resources functions at Merrill Lynch, Goodrich Corporation and Pfizer.

He holds an M.A. in Personnel Psychology from New York University and a B.A. in Psychology from Gettysburg College.
